NIGERIA – The Nigerian vice president, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, has been accused by the Leadership of the National Assembly, of technically buying votes from poor and suffering Nigerians, ahead of the 2019 general elections.
A controversial Scheme has recently been introduced called the Trader Moni, by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government, a few months to the 2019 general elections.
During an open hearing on vote-buying, which was organised by Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki and the Speaker of the House of Reps, Yakubu Dogara, the legislators accused the President Buhari administration of vote-buying, which they described as the highest form of corruption in the country.
Vice President Prof Osinbajo
Other stakeholders and concerned Nigerians at the open hearing, called out vice president Osinbajo, for vote-buying under the guise of the Trader-Moni Scheme. The sudden introduction of the scheme they said, is to induce poor Nigerians to vote for the All Progressives Congress, APC, and President Muhammadu Buhari, in the forthcoming elections.
You may recall, that in recent times, the Vice President has taken it upon himself, to personally reach out to what he described as the poorest of the poor in the society and petty traders, offering them a loan of a N10,000, or N15,000. After giving out the loans, the Vice President proceeds to insist that the traders must only vote for President Muhammadu Buhari in the coming elections.
Trader Moni Scheme recepients
Reacting to this latest form of vote-buying by the APC and its Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, many nigerians and civil society groups aswell as opposition political parties, have condemmed the move and asked that the program be more transparent.
“First, why is this so called Trader-Moni Scheme or Scam, taking effect just a couple of months to the general elections; why does the VP have to personally see through with the scheme, by going all around the 36 States of the Federation, to hand over these monies by himself; why does the very intelligent and well-spoken VP have to sell his boss Buhari, to these gullible Nigerians right after blessing these very poor people with N10,000, by asking them to vote for President Buhari in 2019, and telling them how the President cares so much about them, and that if given a chance again, he would do more for them?
Alleged vote buying
“Isn’t the VP trying to bribe these poor people with N10,000? These are very intelligent questions the recipients of these funds ought to ask themselves at this point in order not to be hoodwinked by dodgy politics.
The only conclusion that can be drawn from the government’s actions is that the Trader Moni Scheme is a calculated means of inducing the poor electorate with money, just ahead of the elections for votes, and covering it up with the scheme.
