LONDON. The Registrar, National Examinations Council, NECO, Professor Charles Uwakwe, has been sacked. Uwakwe, formerly of the University of Ibadan, was appointed Registrar of the examination body, less than two years ago.
As at Press time, no official reason has been given for his sudden disengagement.
Meanwhile, Alhaji Abubakar Gana, said to be the most Senior Director at the Council, has been directed to take over as Registrar in an Acting capacity.
Sources close to the Council, however, revealed that the sack may be connected with an award of a N25 billion contract without the knowledge of either the Federal Ministry of Education, or even the Governing Board of the Council.
Another source alleged that the Registrar was said to have engaged in recruitment of staff, without the knowledge of the appropriate authorities.
